ARTIST BIO:
Cortney is an avid explorer, drawn to discovering the beauty in every environment—from his own backyard to the mountains of Alaska, the side streets of Prague, and everywhere in between. While he enjoys capturing classic “postcard shots” during his travels, he also seeks out the less obvious—looking up, looking down, and zooming in—to find unique perspectives that highlight the subtler beauty of his surroundings.
His photography spans both representational and abstract styles. Sometimes he aims to faithfully mirror the scene as he experienced it, creating images that are authentic reflections of a moment in time. At other times, he experiments with slow shutter speeds and intentional camera movements to produce abstract works—revealing, for instance, how a flower interacts with natural elements like wind and rain.
Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Cortney earned his BFA from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. After spending 13 years living in places as diverse as Tacoma, Nepal, and Kansas City, he returned to Omaha in 2015. There, he met his wife, Jennifer, and the two were married in 2017. They now share their life with their daughter, Ayla, and enjoy kayaking, hiking, and relaxing with their dog, Dea, and cat, Pearl.
ACCOLADES
Member artist of Artists' Cooperative Gallery in Omaha; selected for Annual Cathedral Artist Invitational in Omaha; Nebraska Biennial Juried Exhibition, Gallery 1516.
