ARTIST BIO
Steve Joy, born in 1952, is an accomplished artist and educator with a distinguished international career. He earned his BA in Fine Arts from Exeter University in England, followed by an MFA from Chelsea School of Arts in London in 1981. In 1982, he completed another MFA at Kyoto University of Arts in Japan, where he was awarded the prestigious Monbusho Fellowship. Additionally, he held a fellowship at Cheltenham School of Fine Arts in the UK in 1980.
Throughout his career, Steve Joy has held significant academic positions, including serving as Professor and Head of Fine Arts at the Arts University of Trondheim in Norway (1984–1987), and as Professor and Head of the Painting Department at the Fine Arts Academy of Bergen in Norway (1994–1998). He also taught at the École régionale des Beaux-Arts de Caen in France (1991–1993), and has been a guest professor at numerous art colleges and universities, including in Kansas City, Oslo, Winchester, and Barcelona, among others.
Steve’s work has been featured in numerous solo museum exhibitions, including a 12-year survey at the Sioux City Art Museum and a 35-year retrospective at the Joslyn Museum in Omaha in 1988, for which a monograph titled Uncreated Light: Steve Joy Paintings was published by Prestel of Munich. Other notable solo museum exhibitions include shows at the Drammen Museum, Haugesund Museum, and Trondheim City Art Museum in Norway.
